About Rotary

Rotary is a global network of clubs with 1.2 million members who unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and our clubs.

Our Mission

We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Our Guiding Principles

("The 4 Way Test")

Of the things we think, say or do:

  • Is it the TRUTH?
  • Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

Members have an opportunity to collaborate with men and women from different backgrounds, cultures, religious and political beliefs the world over, allowing ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

The first chartered Rotary Club was in 1905 in Chicago USA and since then has expanded to now have more than 35,000 clubs all over the world. Rotary was established in Australia in 1921 and now has over 1,100 clubs and 30,000 members

Rewarding Experience

"Joined Balgowlah Rotary in 2003 at the invitation of then member and an old friend, Malcolm Bush.

I had just retired from ANSTO and Helen and I had moved to Fairlight from Lindfield, where we and our three sons had lived for more than 30 years.

Rotary has been a rewarding experience in a number of ways. We got to know great people in Rotary and in our local community; As Community Service and Vocational Director I gained a much better understanding of the Dalwood Spilstead Centre, Lifeline and other community organisations and schools based in our Local community and, over the years, and as a recent Past President, I have gained a much clearer appreciation of the wonderful work of Rotary around the world. Finally, for those who would wish to have these same experiences, come and join us."

Roger Gray

Invaluable Support

"Rotary Balgowlah provides invaluable support to Mackellar Girls Campus and our students. For over 13 years, it has sponsored and supported a gamut of truly memorable experiences each year for our youth, including:

National Youth Science Forum, Rypen (Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment), MUNA (Model United Nations), RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness), Australian Business Week as Mentors, United Nations Youth Sponsorship, Comedy Nights for school fundraising and annual student recognition awards.

Mackellar is extremely grateful for the ongoing support for our students that is provided in so many ways by Rotary. It is because of this generosity that students are able to attend such valuable and enriching learning experiences and develop their potential, self-confidence, knowledge and leadership."

Christine Del Gallo, Principal, Northern Beaches Secondary College Mackellar Girls Campus

Good Friends

"In 1994, I Tony Hill joined Balgowlah Rotary Club to be involved in activities in the local Community. I have held many positions including being President in 1997 – 1998. I have made many good friends and a sense of belonging to an excellent Club. It has given me great pleasure to participate in meetings, fund raising and fellowship which as a member I have enjoyed in this friendly Balgowlah Rotary Club."

A Wonderful Journey

" I was initially attracted to Rotary when I was invited to join by John Emmett and Dr Brian Hanley in 1992 because of both its local and International involvement.

Over the years I feel that Rotary has done more for me than I have done for Rotary.

  • I have been a Charter President, Assistant District Governor, Community Service Advisor and International Adviser for our District.
  • I have travelled to Nepal with the Plastic Surgery team, repairing cleft lips and palates
  • I have participated in a National Polio Immunisation Day in India.
  • I participated in a Good Will trip to Myanmar where our Hand Surgery Team were training their surgeons and invited their head surgeon to AMA National Conference.
  • I was on the Eastern Region Rotarians Against Malaria Committee and George McClelland and I did a joint project with Australian Doctors International, supplying Bed Nets and Filariasis treatment to a remote area in Papua New Guinea. Rotary’s original malaria bed netting was a project conceived by Dr Brian Hanley, where Rotary Clubs were encouraged to ‘Adopt a Village’ and supply bed nets for that village at A$10 each.

It has been a wonderful journey and continues to be."
